Work sharing is an unemployment program that allows companies to reduce the number of hours employees work, as an alternative to layoffs. The employees can continue working part time and also receive unemployment compensation at a reduced amount.
Several states including Missouri have a work sharing program. The employer must develop a plan and submit an application to the Missouri Division of Employment Security for approval. The program is a real plus for both employers and employees. It allows companies during tough times to reduce their payroll costs and employees the opportunity to collect some unemployment benefits in addition to being compensated for working reduced hours.
